Inspiration is not an idea; it is an Experience.

In every community, there is work to be done. In every nation, there are wounds to heal. In every heart, there is the power to do it.

The Natural Healers Network, a diverse group of professionals from all facets of natural healing, was founded over six years ago by Tina Deane Coddington. I was fortunate enough to be introduced to this group almost two years ago as a new professional starting my intuitive life coaching business.

Let me take you back two years, to when I first joined this community, and you will see why my endorsement of the Natural Healers Network is so special – not only as a professional woman, but much more significantly, as the Marianne Williamson quote so beautifully states, I am sharing from my heart about the power and passion I have experienced as a member of this group.

I was introduced to this group by member Steve Smith, who I was referred to when looking for a space to host my monthly meetup.  I had no idea what would be ignited by this group almost two years later. The Natural Healers Networking group has been both a source of personal and professional growth, in my opinion, the best kind of growth possible. Not only have I met a fantastic number of members at each meeting, but I have personally benefited from using the services of many in the group.

Every month, Tina has a different focus for the group, sometimes with a personal slant, oftentimes, with a speaker that brings information, inspiration and resources in the areas of marketing, business development, social networking, best practices, and a host of other topics.  Each and every topic has inspired me to take one small action in my life or my life’s work that has led to a growth, a clarity, and an expansion in myself, in my business and in my community.

In just the past two years, due in large part to the topics, speakers, and the services of this community of women and men, I have taken huge steps in my business. I have increased my presence online (LinkedInFacebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Yelp to name a few) through the social media tips from speakers at the meetings.  I spent the last year at work on a new website which I just launched in February. I have created a daily M-F mailing for my subscribers called The Daily Dose – vitamin C (for consciousness) for your soul which is now in its ninth month and I have two very successful monthly Fresh Intuition Women’s Circles that I host through Meetup.  All of this was inspired, influenced or catalyzed by this amazing group of professionals.

Over past two years, Tina and the members have started an active Facebook forum, launched this website and started a Natural Healers Network show with Create TV here in San Jose. The group even dabbled in a book club for a time.  The wealth of relationships, ideas, connections and community is endless.  I am always excited to see what the group will explore next and what a difference each of us, in community, is making in the world.

If you are looking for a place with the passion, the drive and the inspiration to connect you with the heart and soul of your business,  look no further.  Bring community to your life, to your business and to the world…one natural healer, one natural healing, one moment (and month) at a time.

Benefits of Turmeric

Turmeric helps with inflamation and more.

I keep hearing more and more about turmeric and with the benefits for inflammation and arthritis being shown in studies. I just can’t over look all the amazing health benefits of something that is a food easily eaten and added into dishes we make. I am always looking into things that have potential anti inflammatory benefits since that is something many of our clients deal with along with injuries and sports.

From my research it seems that the best way to get more turmeric into your diet is approach it from all sides. Take it in capsule form to insure you get some every day. Also include the ground spice in food. Especially soups, stews, meats and vegetables. It has a strong color but mild flavor, it is traditionally used in curry of course. And I just saw it raw at Whole Foods, it looks like orange ginger (also a great anti inflammatory) you can grate it over dishes, add to sauces or salad dressings. Pair it with some ginger and you will have beautiful, tasty and healthy super foods!

  • It is a potent natural anti-inflammatory that works as well as many anti-inflammatory drugs but without the side effects, Dr. Randy J. Horwitz, the medical director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine and an assistant professor of clinical medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson, wrote a paper for the American Academy of Pain Management in which he discussed the health benefits of turmeric.
  • Curcumin seems to delay liver damage that can eventually lead to cirrhosis, according to preliminary experimental research at the Medical University Graz in Austria.
  • Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, it is a natural treatment for arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Kansas State University research found that adding certain spices, including turmeric, can reduce the levels of heterocyclic amines — carcinogenic compounds that are formed when meats are barbecued, boiled or fried — by up to 40 percent.
  • Rodent studies at the University of Texas indicate that curcumin inhibits the growth of a skin cancer, melanoma and also slows the spread of breast cancer into the lungs.
  • Researchers from the University of South Dakota have found that pretreatment with curcumin makes cancer cells more vulnerable to chemo and radiotherapy
  • Doctors at UCLA recently found that curcumin, the main component in turmeric, appeared to block an enzyme that promotes the growth of head and neck cancer.
In that study, 21 subjects with head and neck cancers chewed two tablets containing 1,000 milligrams of curcumin.  An independent lab in Maryland evaluated the results and found that the cancer-promoting enzymes in the patients’ mouths were inhibited by the curcumin and thus prevented from advancing the spread of the malignant cells.
  • Epidemiologists have hypothesized that the turmeric that is part of daily curries eaten in India may help explain the low rate of Alzheimer’s disease in that country. Among people aged 70 to 79, the rate is less than one-quarter that of the United States.
  • This research, from Italy, was a three-month trial involving 50 patients diagnosed by x-ray with osteoarthritis of the knee. The Italian team was investigating the effect on arthritis symptoms of a curcumin-based preparation optimized for better absorption. Participating patients took the formulation in addition to standard medical treatment; those in the second group continued following their physicians’ recommendations. After 90 days, the researchers found a 58 percent decrease in overall reported pain and stiffness as well as an improvement in physical functioning among the curcumin group compared to the controls. They also found, via a standardized testing procedure, a 300 percent improvement in the emotional well being of the curcumin patients compared with the others. And blood tests showed a 16-fold decline in C-reactive protein, a marker for inflammation. Patients in the curcumin group were able to reduce their use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs by 63 percent, compared to the other group.

I’m very excited to add more turmeric to my diet. It will inspire me to be more creative in my recipes!

The Natural Healer’s Network:

My experience with the Natural Healer’s Network I describe as one of a
life line of support.
I moved to the South Bay area a little over 4 years ago. I left a
successful Private Acupuncture practice in Los Angeles to come up to
the Bay Area and started a new business here. I found the Natural
Healers Network 2 weeks after I moved and have been an enthusiastic
participant in the events of the NHN ever since.

This group represents a life line to a new life. Both in Business and
in my personal life as well. I have made so many dear and important
friendships through this group and have been able to build my new
business in the South Bay using the tips and resources that have been
offered and provided through this amazingly generous group. This
generosity is a reflection of the originator of the group, Tina Deane
Coddington. Her sense of abundance and encouragement is the wellspring
of this generosity.

I have not only been able to promote my business through this group,
but I have been awakened to some incredible healing work being done in
this community. By meeting the business owners that provide these
services, as colleagues, I have come to be able to tap into a resource
of referral partners that rival my 13 years of private practice in
L.A, after only 4 years. That is exponential!!

I wanted to pour my gratitude out for the NHN, Tina and all the
members. Thank you!!

Creating a Heart Centered Life

I have often struggled with this saying- when hearing this from someone or reading about living a heart-centered life somewhere I’ve often thought, “Okay- I’m ready, but what does this really mean?”

Here’s what I suggest you do to first connect with your heart. Close your eyes and breathe, letting go of all of the thoughts in your head. Imagine you are breathing from your heart like a flower bud opening and blossoming- breathe into  your heart and exhale from your heart. Imagine it expanding fully into your chest. Stay with this for a while- keep breathing and just imagine. Envision your heart taking over your chest. Stay here for a bit. Imagine yourself connecting with with everything- the trees, mother earth, the sky, light from the sun and moon. Sit with this for a while and just tap into how this feels. Feel the love and energy that surrounds you and hold that feeling for a few minutes.

How did that feel? I always feel better by doing that exercise.

Living a heart-centered life is being centered and connected to love that constantly surrounding you. Living from a place of connection to all things. We are all made up of the same stuff, energy. When we are connected to that which surrounds us we can come from that safe loving place. It just takes a few minutes of breathing, imagining and connecting.

You can make a decision every day to live a heart centered life. You can choose to get centered and pay attention to all the love that surrounds you. You can use your life to help others connect to their higher purpose as well. Pay attention to your relationships, first to your relationship with yourself and then to your relationship to those around you. Spend some time today really looking at your relationships. Do they serve you or drain you? What do you need to let go of? What do you need to bring in to your life?

When you spend some time thinking about what heart centered means to you- and how you want to live- you have to get your ego and mind out of the way and focus on feelings on openings and looking at where you may be stuck. You have to look at your true essence and where you come from.

This is the big HALLMARK month “Valentines” what valentine can you give yourself?

Open your heart! Give yourself that rather than a box of chocolates, connect with your partner, go to a deeper place with your friends, families, yourself. This is your time to live from your heart.

A shaman can help you with this by opening your heart chakra, disconnecting the ties that bond you to your old ways. Clearing out the cords that connect you so deeply with the energies that don’t work for you anymore. I can help you connect to yourself on a deeper level. You just need to be open and ready for whatever it is that is supposed to happen.

Take this month to really focus on LOVE – CONNECTION – BEAUTY and WHOLENESS.

With LOVE,

Lisa Smith 1
